As an undergraduate, you may have heard the terms “CV” and “Resume” thrown around, especially when applying for internships or jobs. While they might seem interchangeable, they serve different purposes and have distinct formats.
Understanding the difference between them can help you document and present your skills and experience effectively. Now let’s dive into what a resume and a CV mean.
What is a Resume?
A resume is a concise, one-page document that highlights your relevant work experience, skills, and education. It is tailored for specific job applications, emphasizing the qualifications most pertinent to the position you are applying for. Think of a resume as a snapshot of your professional life, designed to quickly grab the attention of hiring managers.
What is a CV?
A curriculum Vitae (CV) is a more comprehensive document detailing your academic and professional history. Unlike a resume, a CV is usually longer and includes information about your educational background, work experience, research, publications, awards and other accomplishments.
Key Differences
From what we have looked at, we can tell that the difference between a resume and a CV is in the length, purpose and customization.
- Length: Resumes are short and targeted, usually one or two pages long, while CVs are longer and more detailed.
- Purpose: When we talk about purpose or usage, resumes are tailored for specific job applications, whereas CVs provide a comprehensive overview of your career and go into details about your professional background and history. For example, you would need a resume when applying to study for your Master’s Degree or PhD in an institution or if you were applying to be a part of a research.
- Customization: Resumes should be tailored to each job application, while CVs provide a complete record of your career, some job applications may request your CV.
In your Resume, you can have just the educational information needed to apply for a particular position, as well as the relevant experience that speaks of your competence to apply for the position, meaning you can have three degrees but choose to include one which is relevant to the position. But when we come to your CV, everything is included, if you have seven degrees, they should most likely be included.
